From then on the whispers can be heard in almost every room with no active enemies, should the player stand still and wait.
The first time Isaac will hear these voices is during Chapter 1, in the corridor right after obtaining the Stasis Module.

Because of the low volume and the numerous voices, it is very difficult to understand what they are saying. Several times throughout the original Dead Space, strange whispers are heard.
